i like the new layout... yes, we must go with the flow, or be swept under, right?
i'm afraid when i return to the states, i'm going to sound like some asian-wisdom greeting card. perhaps, before, i sounded like a radical propaganda greeting card.
anyway, about the "food at meetings," thing. i see where people are coming from on this one, but i think it is a serious mistake of labor unions and any group that's seeking to organize people.
let's face it, White American culture, has a strong anti-food or non-food valuing sentiment. White American culture and cuisine is generally protestant and ascetic. It's cuisine mostly came from England and Prussia, not the best exemplars of European food. In the present day? three words: deep-fried twinkie.
whereas all the immigrant cultures that have come to the U.S., still value food a lot. African-americans, Italians, Latinos, Asians.
We, as Left/Labor activists and intellectuals, are trained to separate politics and prioritize it above all else. But I think for many others, food is such an important part of life, they cannot be separated. It is a big misstep and Cultural misperception for the US labor movement, in my opinion.
Two last points on this: during the 2000 Bush campaign, they provided lobster and other really great foods for the press. They were making them happy and I think it helped them in subtle ways. The Gore campaign? They gave reporters tasteless organic rice cakes or something.
Finally, SEIU alone gave $40 million to one of the least viable Democrat candidates since Dukakis. Can't we spend 40 bucks a meeting to respect non-White (and White) peoples' feelings about food?
you've hit the nail spot on the head about the food at meetings. I agree with you. I'll get over my leftist-intellectual bad self and get down with some tres leches and dim sum!
